1812-(01-06): Frame Size [System: VoIP: Profile (1-4): Codecs (1812): Frame Size]

For the selected CODEC, use this option to specify the frame (voice packet) size. For example, a setting of 40mS means the CODEC will generate a packet containing digitized voice and other control information every 40mS. There are several advantages to selecting the shortest possible packet size:
  • The possibility of a party on the call hearing an audible delay is minimized.
  • If a single packet is lost, the effect of the lost speech will be less obvious.

However, since each packet (regardless of size) has a similar amount of overhead data, shorter packets require more bandwidth. Longer packets contain more voice data per packet and require less bandwidth, but are more susceptible to delay and audible artifacts from dropped packets.
